THE CASE MAGNA, A CASE OF SUCCESS FOR VIRTUAL REALITY

The Virtual Reality, who tries it falls in love with it … and the companies know it too.

Today we will tell you about the success story of a Canadian multinational operating in Italy, which decided to use Virtual Reality, in RV or VR jargon (Virtual Reality), to automate the process of “refresh” training on the safety of their machines of production; yes, thanks to the RV, this process can also be automated.

We are talking about Magna PT spa (formerly GETRAG), a multinational company operating in the automotive sector, which has decided to buy 5 virtual classrooms complete with PCs, viewers, radar and helmets, all integrated into a management software for training … and emotions not they have been missing, especially in the economic savings obtained.

The KPI that was to be achieved was the reduction of operating costs by 40%, without prejudice to the preservation of the same safety training standard and so it was.

We come to the facts and the numbers: very sensitive to the issue of safety, Magna PT performs a training “refresh” twice a year on the safety and safety of their equipment at about 800 operating in the single site of Modugno (Bari).

Before the introduction of the RV, two full time resources managed and carried out this training, with live costs of a teacher (+/- 40,000 €) and one assigned to the organization (+/- 30,000 €). Each operative employed 5h / year for the training refresh.

In 2018, Magna PT purchased five HIL VR (https://mtmreality.com/hil-vr/), reducing the training time to 3h / year thanks to the RV and obtaining an unimaginable KPI.

But how was it possible? Simple, the operative receives an email with the date set for training, enters the Virtual Room and accesses HIL VR, clicks on the training procedure in RV, wears the helmet, sees the procedure to be performed in Virtual Reality, runs it in simulation as if it were directly in production and increasing the safety factor; HIL VR verifies the correctness of the execution, if ok, the operative performs the final test, otherwise it will redo the process.

On balance, HIL VR has cost about € 50,000, amortized on the economic savings both for the reduction of training time and resources to devote to teaching, thus obtaining, in the first year of use, a savings of 65% !!!

Given the results, Magna PT has decided to continue to invest in Virtual Reality and has entrusted the virtualization of many of its production processes to MTM Project (the company producing HIL VR), with the aim of equalizing the previous KPI.

Needless to say that efficient applications in RV can also be done in marketing, assembly, assistance and not just in security.

By the way, the two resources that managed the “refresh” process were not fired, but allocated to other organizational activities, because a better productive capacity means never losing resources and the company history teaches it
